For me; this (admittedly somewhat melancholy) piece always sets a great ‘chill’ running down my spine and visions of a (mythical but graceful) swan than does even Saint-Saens’ piece (from ‘Carnival of the Animals’). What instrument can more aptly portray this waterbird so deeply inspiring as it has been to humans since time immemorial - than the (somewhat gracefully morose) tones of the cor anglais ?

I remember back in 2017, i has just moved into my first appartment. It was october and it was dark and rainy outside. My livingroom/bedroom was only lit with candles and i was listening to this song for the very first time while laying on my couch and just taking it in. I really can't explain but i had an almost religious experience while laying there, i just felt so relaxed while listening to this song

Michael Chance singing Purcell back in the late 80s was my first serious introduction to the countertenor voice and repertoire which I have loved ever since. He remains one of the finest exponents of that register, as proved by this excellent performance. As for his voice being mistaken for that of a woman, I used to play some of his recordings to my work colleagues and the vast majority were amazed to discover the singer was very much a man.

When I heard this Music at the beginning of Visconti's “Death in Venice”, I couldn't believe my ears. I immediately told myself: It's too brilliant and perfect to be the music for a movie. And then I found out that it was a Mahler composition! Music written specifically for films is never so magnificent. And in this case, the Mahlers music is stronger than the whole movie. 😮

ITs obviously that ringing bell from church was the sign that Russia won Napoleons Army and entered Paris in 1814, like every video about this composition by Tchaikovsky shows France entering Moscow but actually its not about it

Notice that the second fugue theme at 6:54 is simply six ascending notes on the minor scale. This is actually a lookback by Bach to the pre-Baroque eras. It's a form called the hexachord, and was used in the late Medieval period, mostly in chant. What Bach does here is amazing, and might be the first time the hexachord form was used in a fugue.

Imagine hearing this in your head and then having the wherewithal to transcribe it into reality. Amazing stuff ⚡️

Like many I came to know Mahler and this piece through the Famous Visconti film. Death in Venice. Back when I was so young in the 1970s. Now retired I am still hooked on his genius. In my book his symphony No 2 'Resurrection' is one meaning of life. The only other being the third movement of Beethoven's 9th. Its a precious secret coming as it does before the more famous Ode to Joy last movement

What an entry @ 1.42. Powerful, majestic and regal.

I heard this song for the first time when I was 11 or 12 years old. I searched frantically for it for years. I had no idea who was the composer. I finally found it nearly 30 years later, and I am shedding tears of happiness.
